Colour Projections and Scores was a project at Newton Abbott School of Art in 1968-69.
Colour Scores
Colour Scores was an exploration of the relationship between a number of themes and media: painting; colour; music; synaesthesia and the relation of abstract painting to music (Kandinsky & Schoenberg).
Some of the images were derived from the notation of Passacaglia Suite No.7 by Händel, where the shape and position of notes on the manuscript influenced the drawings. Other images resembled graphic scores. Before this period, Max had learned to read guitar music so could play some of the musical scores.
It was also influenced by a number of films: Oskar Fischinger; Henry Valensi; Arthur Goodwin; L. Moholy-Nagy; John & James Whitney, as well as performances by Sonic Arts Union, which were a major guiding factor in this and future work.
Colour Projections
Colour Projections used the light shining from an empty slide projector, through rotating coloured discs and cut-out slit filters, to project coloured images onto a screen. Some of the filters were suspended and move independently of the rotating coloured discs.
